Halal !! What does it means actually ??
Salam. Hello. Konichiwa. Hola. :)
This post is unrelated to what this blog is about but an Important one, since many of my NON Urdu/Arabic speaking friends were concerned that why have i chosen such "violent", "unmatched", "odd" name "HALAL" as a prefix for my blog!
To be honest, i don't blame them, their perception about word 'Halal' comes from visiting cards & shop names of butchers spread all over globe who simply put 'Halal' on it, I mean the mental picture associated with halal is an uncle with skull cap & a big knife to chop meats !!!
But that is not what 'Halal' means. In Islam, Halal is an Arabic term meaning “LAWFUL OR PERMISSIBLE” The opposite of halal is Haram, which means "UNLAWFUL OR PROHIBITED".
In reference to food, it is the dietary standard, as prescribed in the Quran (Muslim Scripture). Halal and haram are universal terms which not only encompasses food and drink, but all matters of daily life & applies to all facets of life.
While many things are clearly halal or haram, there are some things which are not clear. Further information is needed to categorize them as halal or haram. Such items are often referred to as mashbooh, which means doubtful or questionable. Just some examples for making things clear for once and all.
- Consumption of Water is Halal while Alcoholic drinks is Haram.
- Fish is Halal while Pork is not.
- Salary/Income from genuine source is Halal while Interest (From banks/loans or any kind) is Haram.
- Being Intimate with wife is Halal while having sex outside marriage is Haram.
- Believing in Fate&Destiny is Halal while superstitions/Myths/Magic/Fortunetelling/Omens is Haram.
- Nikah with cousin is Halal while with siblings is Haram.
Coming to blog title "Halal Shaadi", What we hope to achieve is encourage youths to marry without extravagances / Dowry / Burdening bride's family and away from many other social evils which has engulfed our current society.
Verses from Quran regarding Halal&Haram :
“O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, And render thanks to Allah if it is (indeed) He whom ye worship” (Chapter 2 verse 172).
“He hath forbidden you only carrion, and blood, and swineflesh, And that which hath been immolated to (the name of) any other than Allah. But he who is driven by necessity, Neither craving nor transgressing, it is no sin for him. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful” (Chapter 2 verse 173).
Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) mentions, "The halal is clear and the haram is clear, and between them are matters unclear that are unknown to most people. Whoever is wary of these unclear matters has absolved his religion and honor. And whoever indulges in them has indulged in the haram. It is like a shepherd who herds his sheep too close to preserved sanctuary, and they will eventually graze in it. Every king has a sanctuary, and the sanctuary of Allah is what He has made haram. There lies within the body a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Verily this piece is the heart." (Bukhari, Muslim)
